What Is It With Hawaiian Spelling?
I was having a marvelous time on the web last night looking at Oahu vacation rentals and getting mightily confused by the very unusual spellings and names for islands, towns and villages. The English-speaking person has a bit of a battle with them. Take the name Oahu. That’s a whole lot of vowels there and it’s just about impossible to remember the spelling just by glancing once or twice at the name. Can you honestly say you would never mix them up and spell Oahu as Oauh, Aohu, Ohau, Oahwho or Oawoo? I know I did when I was busy googling for Hawaii travel information to book our annual vacation. And look at this one: not only are there towns and villages called Waimea on more than one island, but that gets misspelled as Wa1nea, Awimea Wainea, Waiema, Wamiea, Wiamea, , Waima, Waiea, Wimea, Wimea, Waimea, Wamea, Waimae, Waime and so on and on. And, yes, the main website for Hawaii travel accommodation,
Hawaiian Beach Rentals, reports that even the name Hawaii gets misspelled all the time as Hawai, Hawiai, Hawhaii, Hawia, Hawhai, Hawa1, Haawii, Hwaaii, Ahwaii, Aawhye. It makes “Aloha!” seem possibly straightforward. Maybe that is why Americans have made it synonymous with Hawaii. They can say it and they can spell it. Aloha!
