If you have ever wondered how much reach your blog has and how valuable advertising is on your blog (a very common and often difficult question of what is the market value for your ad space..) you might be interested to check out the text-link-ads blog juice calculator.

You can also catch a good and detailed post about it on John Chow’s blog. He goes much deeper than me and has some nice pretty pictures aswell, so I recommend checking it out.

Domain and Host Shopping

June 28, 2007 By: admin Category: Blogging No Comments →

I was having a surf around this morning when I came across this cool site. There is a lot of great internet related stuff on this blog, and I would recommend checking it out if you are interested in internet stuff, marketing, site design, SEO, news, making money from your website etc. I really liked the articles I read today, they were professional and easy to read aswell as being very detailed.

For example, one that I thought was worth really highlighting was one about finding a web host. This is towards the more advanced end of website design, and is the big turning point for alot of people where their interest in the internet changes from a passing fancy to something more like either a full-blown hobby or getting up to a dedicated obsession they hope will make them money.

I would put myself in the last category. And so, it was with interest that I found this article. It is detailed and has loads of great tips that you might be able to work out yourself, but it would take you a lot longer than just cruising over to this guys blog and reading all his research.

Check it out here.

Free or Paid web hosting?

March 11, 2007 By: admin Category: Blogging No Comments →

It is a common question. What is better for my blog, free or paid hosting?

This is an important question, and the answer is not as obvious as you might think. If you read a lot of good blogging resource sites, like problogger and copyblogger, you will pretty consistently get the same answer. Get onto your own domain.

But, I still maintain that the answer is not that simple. And clear cut.

I am a personal finance person, who likes other subjects. So, my perspective is always informed by the pragmatic approach of the true personal finance blogger. And also from the training I have had in finance.

Like financial decisions, whether you choose to spend the extra money to host your own dedicated domain (your own dot com) or whether you opt for one of the free options that are out there is going to come back to your personal situation, and your purpose for having a blog.

Also bear in mind that you can start on a free blog with someone like blogger and then upgrade to your own dot com down the track. Sort of try before you buy.

But, one thing that I have to say, is that you should think about it. And think about it good. Because, once you start pouring your soul into a blog, and you start getting traffic, readers, subscribers, links and sponsors it is very hard to tear yourself aware from the name you have built. So you need to make sure you get it right from the start.

If you are looking for a good web host I personally recommend bluehost. They are the best around, in my opinion. And I have looked at lots of companies. Their link is at the top of the left side menu here.
